Volunteers: MLK Day of Service at CAFB

(click any image to view website)

Approximately 30 RSVP Volunteers participated in the 2010 MLK Day of Service project at the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas. The volunteers worked in the Food Bank's Product Recovery Room where pallets of donated foodstuff are separated, inspected, sorted, boxed and weighed for distribution to neighborhood food pantries, meal sites and a wide range of human and social service agencies throughout Central Texas. During a half-day's work, these volunteers helped process 9,614 pounds of food, which will translate into 7,691 meals to nourish hungry people. Well done!

What talents do YOU have that are just waiting to be expressed through volunteer work?

Volunteers: Joan Teaches Line Dancing

(click any image to view website)

Joan has a real passion for line dancing. So twice a week at the South Austin Senior Activity Center she shares that passion with others. The classes are free, and more than 100 older adults attend each class! Joan organizes the music, the site setup, the communication (weekly email, fliers, etc.) and everything else that's required. And the seniors LOVE it!

What talents do YOU have that are just waiting to be expressed through volunteer work?

Patricia and I did a photo session recently and these are a few of the selects. We shot on the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge right around sunset when the skies were filled with color. You can see more pictures from this session by clicking here.

Events: Ignite Austin

(click any image to view website)

Five Minutes, Twenty Slides: What Would YOU Say?
Ignite Austin brought together an inspiring and unexpected blend of thinkers from business, art, technology, government and academia. All with ideas. And all willing to share them. The goal was to spark new conversations and collaborations across cultures and disciplines. See the website by clicking here. The first Ignite Austin was held on Wednesday, January 14, 2010 at the Phoenix lounge in downtown Austin. The joint was packed. It was a great show! Here are just a few of the great pictures I caught of the evening.

Wide shot of the room. Big crowd!

Whurley (left) and Josh Baer (right) were sort of emcee's for the evening.

Impromptu Portraits: Urban Fishing

I bet there aren't too many cities in the USA where you can catch a five-pound large-mouth bass... right downtown! Steve Garcia reeled in a beauty as I walked along the Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail. Luckily, my camera was ready for it.

Impromptu Portraits: Dapper Dan Dash/Shannon Tweed Ride

(click any image to view larger)

The Peddler Bike Shop (Austin, Texas) cooked up this cool ride for mid January. Everyone was expected to wear tweed and knickers (at least make an attempt at it) for this jaunty bike ride around town ending back at the shop for tea and scones. I met up with them when the group took a rest on the Lamar Pedestrian Bridge (Pfluger Bridge). Glad I had my camera! What a hoot!
